Hatsusaburo Yoshida’s birds eye view of Japan

Today in Japan we’re celebrating the life and works of Hatsusaburo Yoshida with a special doodle that recalls the birds-eye view landscapes he is famous for. A kimono painter who later took up graphic design, Yoshida pioneered the use of parallel perspectives in creating maps. His maps became very popular after they were adopted by the Ministry of Railways to illustrate the major public transport networks in Japan.

Our doodle is based on Yoshida’s drawing of Kyoto. See whether you can recognize this part of Kyoto’s landscape in Google Earth today.
